Shewy & Ian's English Life

Torbay

Torbay - an area in South Devon

Torbay is a borough in the South of Devon (about 40 miles east of Plymouth). It consists of three towns, which each have their own characteristics and qualities. Torbay is named after the bay which the three towns are built around (Tor Bay). From the bay looking left you see the old fishing town of Brixham, looking straight ahead in the town of Paignton and on the right is the 'city-like' town of Torquay.

Torquay
Torquay's origins as a holiday resort date back to Victorian times when it was a fashionable destination for the English aristocracy. Today the legacy remains with clean white villas, beautiful gardens and elegant buildings.

Its elegant Victorian terraces, white villas and famous seven hills provide the backdrop to popular modern facilities and a busy shopping centre.

Torquay's waterfront is the focus of life in the town. Here you'll find the palm-lined promenade, seafront gardens, a lively harbour and an international marina. Yet within minutes of the town centre there are beautiful beaches easily accessible by foot, road or water.

There is an abundance of pavement cafes, pubs, restaurants and nightlife, good quality shops and a host of family attractions.

Paignton
Families love Paignton. Its long sandy beaches, colourful atmosphere, paddler-friendly waters and first class attractions are the essential ingredients for a magical family holiday.

Oldway Mansion at dawn

During the summer months life seems to revolve around the seafront which comes alive to the sound of laughter and holiday fun. But there is also another side to this distinctive seaside town, which can be found in the elegance of Oldway Mansion, the green coastline around Elberry Cove and the architecture of Palace Avenue and Torbay Cinema.

At night Paignton's seafront comes alive with illuminations and is perfect for an evening stroll.

Brixham
Life inBrixham centres on the harbour and the bustle of one of Britain's busiest fishing ports.

You can wander around the many harbourside shops, watch the fishermen unloading their daily catch, or marvel at the skill of the artists who gather to depict harbour scenes at Artist's Corner.

Sample freshly caught seafood from one of the quayside's fish stalls, or relax in a pub or restaurant and watch life go by. Away from the harbour you can lose yourself in a maze of narrow, winding streets, and within walking distance from the town centre you will find some of the Riviera's most spectacular scenery. Sandy beaches and secluded coves give way to the towering cliffs at Berry Head, offering breathtaking views of Torbay.
